Older electrical systems may need to be upgraded to accommodate our modern needs. We often have several appliances and devices running at once, including ACs, heat pumps, laundry machines, water heaters, dishwashers—not to mention all of our various gadgets and entertainment systems.

This is why it’s important to have a full electrical inspection performed on an older home. Fires due to damaged wiring or malfunctioning systems are among the most common causes of property damage in the nation. During inspection, we will assess every component of your electrical system, including outlets and switches.

Culpeper Home Services provides professional outlet and switch replacements. Our Culpeper County electricians will help you remove outdated or damaged units and install new, code-compliant parts. Give us a call today to get started!

What Kind of Outlet Should You Install?

As we continue to use more and more advanced technology, our outlets have also adapted to keep up with our needs. Take a look at some of the options you have when planning replacement.

Two-Prong or Three-Prong Outlets

Older homes are likely to have two-prong outlets, which are no longer code-compliant. (The only exception is if your home doesn’t already have a grounding wire in the circuit dedicated to the two-prong outlet.)

To help you enjoy increased safety and peace of mind, we recommend upgrading any two-prong outlets to three-prongs. The latter features a ground wire that directs power surges to the ground and prevents you from getting shocked.

You have the option to install either a traditional three-pronged outlet or a GFCI outlet (which provides greater protection against accidental electrocution).

USB Outlets

These look just like regular outlets, but with the addition of USB ports. There are usually two ports per outlet; you also have the option of installing a fully dedicated USB outlet with several ports. Before we install this type of outlet for you, we will need to see if your home’s current amperage is able to handle charging your different devices.

We also help homeowners install new cable outlets, as well as tamper resistant outlets for households with small children.

Replacing Your Electrical Switches

Want to install a new dimmer switch for more convenient lighting control? We’ll help you with any additions or replacements. Other types of wall switches we install include: single-pole, double-pole, three-way, and four-way switches. These all look similar from the outside, but each one features a different function.

Our licensed electricians will help you determine if your electrical switches need to be serviced or replaced. If new installations are needed, we will go over your options and help you select the right type of switch for your property.
