Perhaps you’re planning to move into an older home. Maybe you’re already living in one. The charm of historic properties continues to attract discerning homebuyers.

But before you sign on the dotted line, make sure you’ve done due diligence and research on the home’s infrastructure. Older homes often feature outdated electrical systems that will have trouble accommodating the various electronic devices and appliances we use today.

This is where we come in. Culpeper Home Services provides a full range of electrical solutions to help protect Culpeper County homeowners from potential dangers caused by faults in the wiring, outlets, or panel boxes. We will perform a complete electrical inspection on your home to identify problem areas and determine if your property needs to be rewired.

When is Rewiring Necessary?

Homes that are over half a century old likely have outdated features such as aluminum wiring, fuse boxes, and knob-and-tube wiring. While these dated components are not necessarily bad or dangerous to have (many well-maintained older homes continue to work just fine with them),  they may not be able to handle the increased electrical demands of modern homeowners.

This is why we recommend conducting an electrical inspection before deciding to move forward with whole-home rewiring. Call us for an evaluation if you notice any of the following:

  • Circuit breakers constantly tripping
  • Outlets emitting a burning smell
  • Outlets or switches that look burnt or discolored
  • Lights flicker or dim when another device powers on

If you are experiencing frequent problems, or if something just seems off lately about your outlets or wiring, don’t hesitate to call our team for immediate electrical services in Culpeper County.

What Happens During the Rewiring Process?

Complete home rewiring will involve some minor construction work. We may need to remove sections of your ceiling or walls to access the old wiring and place in new ones.

You might be thinking: “But my home is old! Can it handle walls being torn down?”

We understand you want to preserve the integrity of your home. Fortunately, our rewiring process doesn’t involve tearing down walls. Instead, we will only perform a small cut, just large enough so we can remove the old wiring and route in new ones using fish tape and rods. This method is less invasive and won’t damage your home’s original structure.

The new rerouted wiring will be non-metallic sheathed cable. This type of wiring is less likely to heat up if covered by insulation.

Older homes have lower electrical services—often less than 100 amps. This is why we will also upgrade your home’s service size during rewiring. Homes today often require 150 to 200 amps to properly serve AC units, furnaces, water heaters, ranges, and more.
