We all love the charm and history of older homes—but not the plumbing problems that may come with them! Older properties have old sewer lines to match, which can lead to major plumbing headaches if not handled in a timely manner.

Whether you need to replace old sewer pipes or you’re looking for help with sewer line repair, you’ve come to the right place! Culpeper Home Services is committed to delivering outstanding results for our neighbors throughout Culpeper County and Northern Virginia.

We understand that sewer line repair or replacement is a significant investment and not a decision to be made lightly. That’s why we focus on educating our customers about the problem and the available solutions. As an informed customer, you’ll be in a better position to make the right decision for your home.

Problems Affecting Your Sewer Lines

Homes constructed even just thirty years ago might be using outdated pipe material or hiding problems such as leaks or cracks. Older properties often feature sewer lines made of clay, cast-iron, or Orangeburg; while these were popular choices in the past, they now likely need replacement due to corrosion and deterioration.

How do you know if your sewer line is broken or deteriorating? You’ll begin to experience plumbing issues related to aging pipes: slow drains, multiple blocked drains, and backups in the shower when you flush the toilet.

Other warning signs of a sewer line problem:

  • Mold or mildew growth due to hidden leaks
  • Sewer odors around your home
  • Cracks in your foundation
  • Depression in your lawn or yard

These problems are often caused by cracked sewer pipes under the base or slab. Clogged sewer lines (due to tree roots, build up, or corrosion) also result in plumbing and structural issues.

So what can we do to help?

Fixing Damaged Sewer Pipes

Before we start working on your sewer line, we perform a camera inspection to determine the exact cause of the problem. Knowing whether it’s tree roots, corrosion, or another element affecting your pipes allows us to provide you with the most accurate solution. (In some cases, you may not need sewer line replacement at all. If the problem is a blockage in your pipes, hydro jetting might solve the issue!)

If we determine that pipe repair or replacement is necessary, we will discuss our plan of action with you. Broken or leaking sewer lines are fixed by digging a trench around the length of the line, exposing the pipes for easy access. We will handle every step of the project, from determining the slope, trenching and laying the bedding, setting the pipe, and backfilling the trench.
Sewer line repair or replacement may take up to a week to complete. The exact timeframe will vary and depends on several factors, including ease of access to the pipes, the size and length of the pipes, their age and material, and the type of damage they’ve incurred.

Ask Us About Trenchless Solutions

Resolving your sewer line problems doesn’t need to be a messy ordeal. Culpeper Home Services offers trenchless sewer line replacement options that allow you to skip the heavy excavation and leave your foundation, landscaping, and driveway intact.

Many homeowners are not aware of trenchless technology as an alternative to traditional methods. But we want to provide our customers with a complete range of options and will inform you of this choice if we think it would benefit your situation.

What is Trenchless Sewer Line Repair and Replacement?

Trenchless technology makes it possible to get brand new sewer pipes without significant disturbance to your property. There is no major excavation involved, and the process takes less than a day to complete. The results of trenchless repair or replacement are comparable in quality to traditional methods—this is a long-term solution that is designed to provide you with a reliable sewer line for 50+ years.

There are two main options when you choose to go trenchless:

Pipe burstingThis method completely breaks apart (bursts) your old sewer line and leaves a new one in place. The new pipe material will either be MDPE or HDPE (medium- or high-density polyethylene). Only two access holes are required to complete the job, so there won’t be a complete upheaval of your lawn or yard.

Pipe liningThis is also known as the cured-in-place method. We saturate a pipe liner with epoxy resin, then push the liner through your existing sewer pipes. The liner will dry and harden in a few hours, forming a new “cured in place pipe.” This process is recommended for sewer lines with cracks or breaks but still structurally sound overall.

Keep in mind that trenchless methods are not one hundred percent dig-free. We will still need to create access points to fit in the new pipe material. However, the digging will be limited to one or two areas.
